Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot stumble. He who watches over you will not slumber. Yes, he who watches over Israel will not slumber. He will not sleep. The Lord watches over you. The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will watch to keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life. The Lord will watch over your going and your coming from now to eternity.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Looking up at the majesty of the mountains, one realizes how small we are. What can we do? As people, there are so many things in this world that can cause harm. Yet while you maintain these mountains in the palm of your hands, you also concern yourself with details of our day so that you will not let us stumble. At the same time, you do not force us to love you; we all began as your enemy. When we were formed in our mother’s womb, you gave us free will, so we are not robots or slaves that do your every bidding. Through the hearing of your Word, you have created faith in us so your Spirit can deliver us from our sins; because of Jesus’ sake. He died to take our punishment; through faith in him, we have life.
Lord, you know the innermost parts of us, even our thoughts. When our minds cause us to wander away from you, we can physically and spiritually find ourselves in trouble. But, you keep us safe; you never sleep. You have done and continue to do everything you can to keep us into eternity. With the words of the hymn writer, we pray, “Guide us by the hand until we reach our Fatherland.” Please never let us fall and forgive us when we do, according to your love and mercy. Many things could harm us, you know this, and you are already there with us. Lord, you are more superior than the majestic mountains; for that, we say thank you. Please watch our coming and going and keep us to eternity as you have promised in your Word. Amen.
