Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Dear Lord Jesus,
Your words help us to understand where our heart lies. Is it in the things of the world “keeping up with the Joneses?” Or is it in finding heaven’s treasures? We can be eager to make an easy life for ourselves, that, we can get pulled into chasing after this world’s stuff. We pray that you would help us not turn your blessings into idols. As believers, you provide us with what we need and then some homes, clothes, shoes, families, transportation, etc. However, these are things that are here today and gone tomorrow. Our hearts should not be set on these things but on our salvation that can never be taken from us. It comes to us from your word. There, with our hearts firmly rooted, we are fed the nutrients we need to sustain this life. Because of our sins, we should receive a wage of eternal death; instead, you came to this earth and won our redemption. You went to the cross and suffered our punishment; then you covered us with your righteousness. Our salvation—which you won on the cross—is our treasure. It was brought to us through faith, established Holy Spirit. It is our trust in you that brings forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Our salvation is the treasure that will never be destroyed or stolen; this is where our hearts need to be. Forgive us, Lord, when we chase after the things that can be destroyed or stolen. Please turn us back to your cross and restore our hearts back to the treasure that can never be lost. Amen.
