John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them. They testify about me!

Dear Lord Jesus,

You were scolding the Jews in their unbelief as they thought somehow Moses was of higher authority than you. The Jews searched the scriptures as a rule book. They looked for all the works they had to do and the different ways to justify themselves; they even created more rules to accomplish this. But, in the end, they could not keep even the laws you had given. There is no working our way to heaven because all our efforts fall short.

We can search the scriptures in one way, realizing you were the one to whom Moses’s writings were pointing. You were the fulfillment of the Old Testament promise, and as we read the Bible, you are the subject of the entire book. May we search the scriptures to find you and the life you bring to us. Though we were caught up in our sins, deserving only death, you came to this earth and suffered our death. You endured and took into yourself the punishment for our sins, and in return, gave us your perfection. All this comes by the simple means of faith in you, which you sent your Spirit to us, giving us what we need through faith and trust in you and your work; we know you have forgiven us our every single sin. We respond in love to you and others for all the blessings you have given us; this is by faith! Lord, strengthen our faith through your word that through you we have life. Also, please provide us with opportunities to share your promise with others, that they may also search the scriptures and know you. Amen.

Jesus is life! There is no other way to have eternal life but through him.
