Isaiah 9:2

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. For those living in the land of the shadow of death, the light has dawned.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending the light into the world. When the world fell into sin, we were separated from you and from the light. The shadow of death came across all people, and it reminds us of our sins as it cast its darkness over the earth. This was no ordinary shadow; it was the complete darkness for every sin. There was nothing we could do on our own the wage of sin was death—death overshadowed our lives.

But you sent your Son the light of the world. He came bringing light into the world; through him was the forgiveness of sins he won for us on the cross. He restored the light like the morning’s dawning to the world as he has redeemed us from all our sins. Jesus is the light of the world that has removed death’s darkness. His light shows us our sins and the need for our Savior to take all our sins away; we need Jesus’ forgiveness. And, this light is received through faith delivered to us by your Holy Spirit. Thank you for sending us your Son and Holy Spirit that we have the light and believe. Amen.

For people used to stumbling in darkness, the dawn can be horrifying. Jesus’ forgiveness is for all people, and with his forgiveness comes the removal of all the guilt and shame; step into the light of God’s word and hear his forgiveness for you.
