John 8:12

When Jesus spoke to them again, he said, “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Dear Lord Jesus,

We live in a world that is so darkened by sin. The world around us stumbles because it cannot see. Being gripped with fear of an unknown or unseen ending makes life terrifying. They walk through life unaware of what looms in the dark. It is understandable why the world tries to cling onto anything that would seem to bring light—logic, medicine, government, or science. Yet all that is of man’s design still brings no light into the world and is a false hope. What the world looks for is a way to overcome death. Lord, there is such a fear of death all around us, and rightly so. People are terrified because of their sin and the eternal destruction that awaits them: where the worm never dies, and the flame is never put out.

But, you have given us hope. You are the light of the world; you illuminate our sin. While Many try to hide what they have done, spotlighting what we have done is what we need. You have told us the Father expects us to be perfect, and your word shows us how we have miserably failed at perfection. However, you did not stop there. Instead, you came into this world to forgive us. You did this by keeping every law, maintaining the Father’s will, and living without sin—all that we could not do. Then you credited your perfection to us when the Father looks at us; he sees you in us. Then you paid the ultimate price by willingly giving up your life on the cross, paying the price for our sins, thus restoring us in righteousness to the Father. All this you delivered to us through faith; you sent us your Spirit to create trust in us so we will believe in these amazing gifts you have given us.

So by faith in you, we no longer walk in the darkness because we believe in you. We have nothing to fear because we walk in your light and see that our sins are removed. Strengthen our faith with your word and grant us the love and courage to share this good news of light with those still stumbling in the dark. Amen.

Walking in Jesus’ light, what do you have to fear? As Jesus often said, “Do not be afraid!”  Nothing can harm you when you walk in his light.
