Psalm 4:8

In complete peace, I will lie down, and I will sleep, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this new day you have brought us to—another day of grace. You have numbered our days so precisely that we should not worry when we lie down to sleep. This Psalm was written for the one who trusts in you, and as we close our eyes to sleep, we shouldn’t worry, “what if something happens to me?” Yet as we sleep, we are vulnerable to all kinds of things that could happen, and you make me dwell in safety. Father, you send your angels to watch over us to keep us in your care. Forgive me when I arise in the morning when I can see all around me, and then I worry about what could happen to me. You are the same God who protected me at my most vulnerable when I was in darkness asleep.

Lord, all that could happen to me through the night is pale compared to what could happen to me being stuck asleep in the darkness of my sins. Yet you made me dwell in safety. When we were divided from you in sin, you sent your Son to forgive the entire world’s sins by his death on the cross. There he forgave my sins. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to create the faith to believe in His works and restore us back to you. So, we have complete peace through faith in Jesus’ works.

Out of love for what Jesus has done for us, give us the courage through faith to share Jesus’ love with others—those who still remain in darkness’ fear. So that they too will know of your love and how you will make them dwell in safety. Amen.
