2 Timothy 2:11-13

This saying is trustworthy: Indeed, if we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; If we endure, we will also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He will also deny us; If we are faithless, He remains faithful, because He cannot deny Himself.

Dear Heavenly Father,

This life is like a gantlet we must endure, everything trying to pull us off course from loving you. While no one is forced into trusting you, we all start off as sinners against you. From the time of Noah, Moses recorded, “the Lord saw the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and every intention of the thoughts of his heart was evil continually.” And David wrote in the Psalms, “in sin did my mother conceive me.” But, we are not alone. You sent your Son, and he sent the Holy Spirit. So as Paul wrote to Timothy, if we endure in our faith and hold fast to you, we will reign with Christ. The Holy Spirit started our faith through your Word and sacraments; we live by faith. Moreover, as Paul also wrote, if we die with Jesus, we will also live with him; by believing in Jesus and his death, we have eternal life. Jesus was faithful even unto death for our sins; that will never change. However, you give us a warning. If someone has believed and now rejects Christ’s gifts, they will be denied. Let this be a sobering reminder to always remain in your Word and continuously feed our faith, so we never deny Christ and endure to the end. Faith comes from you, but turning from faith comes from ourselves. Lord, please do everything always to keep your Word in front of us so we can endure to the end. Let us never walk away from you, either in sickness or health, until we depart this life. Amen.

Jesus’ love is the constant; he is unchanging. The unknown variable is us. Remain in God’s Word to endure to the end. Jesus has delivered to us forgiveness, life, and salvation.
