Psalm 90:1-2

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are our dwelling place; guide us to understand what this means that we dwell in you. To “live in you” means this is where we have our security and protection. But we cannot come there on our terms or through our means decide we will make you our home. Even here, we have laws against uninvitedly assuming someone else’s home. And because of our sinful natures, we naturally want nothing to do with you, you are a holy God, and we are sinful. For you to be our home means that all the effort comes from you. First, we must be invited; second, something had to be done to overcome our loveless sinful nature since holiness and sin cannot coexist.

You sent your prophets and priests throughout the Old Testament to invite us, then sent you Son. He said, “come to me all you who are burdened, and I will give you rest.” And, “no one comes to the Father except through me.” So we have the invite, what to do about our sin? Your Son willingly came to suffer for our sins. You established your plan of salvation before you created the world; when the time was just right, Jesus would become part of the creation. As true God and man, he would live a perfect life in our place and credit us with His righteousness. Then Jesus went to the cross to suffer the punishment of our sins in place of us. So, by believing in Jesus and what he had done, our sins are removed; we are restored to you. Faith does not come to us on our own but through the Holy Spirit. Through your Spirit creating faith in us, we believe in Jesus’ forgiveness. You are God, and you do not change; Abraham was restored to you by faith in a Savior to come, and it is by faith in the same Savior who came we also are restored. You are our dwelling place. Be with us to share this good news with someone who does not know you so they, too, can have you as their dwelling place and enjoy eternal life. Amen

Jesus has given an open invite and paid the price of your admission; that was his holy, innocent blood. He died on the cross for your sins. This heavenly gift is yours through faith in Jesus.
