John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them. They testify about me!

Dear Lord Jesus,

Through you, we have eternal life. For the first century Jews, they were searching for the hope of salvation, and we are the same today. Lord, we all know we will be held responsible for everything we have done in our lives. People state: “well, I hope I have been good enough to get into heaven.” The problem is we all fall short of the perfection that is demanded of us to get into your home. On our own, it is only a wish to get through the door. Your word tells us to be perfect just as God is perfect, so living a better life will not do it; comparing ourselves to others we fall short like they do, and trying to make up for what we have done, doesn’t make any of the wrongs we have done better. When we look at your word, we realize how much we need a Savior, just like those people when you came to this earth looked for one. So you came to suffer the punishment for all our sins and endure the cross’s pain; you gave up your life to defeat death for us so we would have life. All this comes to us through faith, just believing you in you and your saving work for us. The deal was done; you suffered and died for our sins. Searching the scriptures tells us we needed to be saved, and you did that. None of our salvation was because we deserved it, but instead, you came out of love for us when we were unlovable. So you took our punishment and gave us eternal life in its place by forgiving us our sins.

Lord, we pray for opportunities to share your scriptures with someone who does not know you. So that they, too, will find you and have eternal life. Amen.

All the Bible tells us it is about the promise and fulfillment of Jesus. Through his love, he died on the cross to forgive us of our sins, and we have eternal life.
