Matthew 20:28

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Dear Heavenly Father,

You sent your Son to serve us. Today, we live in a society that is all about helping ourselves and pulling ourselves up when we are down. We thank you for sending us your Son, who gave us the ultimate example of service.

We were lost in our sins, divided from you, and saw you as our enemy. Our sins made us want to run from you. However, Jesus became part of your creation to live under the law you had given to us, and he served us by living under it perfectly. Then, he credited us with his perfection; Jesus was innocent; he had committed no sin. Instead, he became sin for us, taking our sins into himself, suffering our punishment upon the cross. There on the cross, Jesus endured your wrath. You turned your back on him for our sins, and our penalty for sin was paid in full by Jesus. He gave his life as a ransom for many, so by believing in Jesus, our sins are completely forgiven. Jesus took our punishment and gave us his righteousness in return; that is service completely undeserved, and that is your grace.

Through faith, we no longer fear you. Thank you for sending Jesus—to serve us—and your Spirit—to begin faith in us—so we believe in him and trust in you. Let your love for us be our inspiration to serve others; that we will share your love with those who still do not know how Jesus has served them. May faith’s seed be planted so they, too, will know and trust in their Savior and share in the eternal life with all believers. Amen.

Dying for one’s enemies is a stunning example of love, which is what Jesus did. God sent Jesus to serve us through his holy life and innocent death; Jesus restored eternal life to us through his life, death, and resurrection.
