Psalm 19:7-11

The law of the Lord is perfect. It revives the soul. The testimony of the Lord is trustworthy. It gives wisdom to the inexperienced. The precepts of the Lord are right. They give joy to the heart. The commandment of the Lord is bright. It gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure. It stands forever. The just decrees of the Lord are truth. They are altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold, even better than much pure gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the honeycomb. Yes, by them your servant is warned. In keeping them there is great reward.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for these verses from David; they remind us of how perfect your law is. For all who know and trust you, in faith, we receive the comfort which comes through your word. It is for all people, those just learning about you, others who have known you longer, and those who have known you all their lives. Your word is bright. It brings to light our sin, which was handed down to us by our parents. Sin caused us to despise you and make you our enemy. No one is good in the way you demanded; that was perfection. We each try to satisfy our needs at the expense of not loving you or others perfectly. Your word sheds light on our plight of sin; you should condemn us because of our less-than-perfect record in loving you and others. When we look at our sin and how you should deal with us, we should be terrified of you; there is no place we can go or nothing we can do to overcome our iniquities.

However, this is not the fear we have for you. Instead, we have a reverent fear because of your mercy. You punished your Son in our place; Jesus suffered on the cross for our sins, and he allowed himself to be separated from you. You turned your back on him because he had taken our sins upon himself and became sin for us. Then he died and rose to defeat death for us. Regardless of whether someone believes this, it is still the truth about your love for human beings. Through faith in Jesus, we have complete pardon for all our sins; Jesus removing our sins restored us to you. These words of joy, peace, mercy, and grace are sweeter than honey to our ears; they drip with your love. We receive this through your word, and you warn us to always remain in you. Lord, you have provided an excellent reward for all who believe in you—revived, saved, and eternal life.

Lord, your law, is perfect, so let us not be afraid of sharing it with someone who does not know you. So even though they are inexperienced in you, your Spirit will give them your wisdom; they will receive the joy and peace that passes all human understanding. Through faith, they will know you have given them eternal life. Amen.

The law curbs the lawless to keep order in the world. It then shows us our sins, so we know how we have offended God and need a Savior. There it prepares us to hear the gospel’s sweet words—you are forgiven, with the breech of sin removed, eternal life is yours!
