Mark 10:45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Forgive us when we lose sight of why you were here—because of our sin. It is hard to understand that you came for the intended purpose of serving us. When you came here, you focused on loving your Father and us, not on what you could get out of the deal. Our sinful nature skews how we look at your work. We look through our sinful lens, concerned about: how can I make the most of my life? How can I bend another’s will to get done what I need? However, in your perfect love, your will was connected to your Father’s will to do whatever needed to be done to rescue us from our selfishness and sin. Lord, you had to teach us about love; you demonstrated perfect love by giving your life in place to ransom ours. You innocently suffered the cross to serve us, giving up your life for ours.

Forgive us all our sins. We have forgiveness because you served us by giving your life as a ransom in our place. Please send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith through your word, so we can hold on to your promise of eternal life that comes through the forgiveness you won. Then give us the courage to share with others—those who do not know you—the ways you served and gave up your life as a ransom for them. So that through your word, they will believe in you and have eternal life. Amen.

May your focus be not on what you get for sharing Jesus with others, but so others may get Jesus; so that by believing, they, too, will share in the eternal life already yours through faith.
