John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished!” Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
Dear Lord Jesus,
These three small words you said carried the weight of the world. The reckoning of our books was complete; you paid off every debt of sin. You loved the Father perfectly, completing the plan of salvation by willingly suffering in our place. You kept the law our first parents broke until your last breath. You finished all your work—the law fulfilled, our punishment satisfied, our debt paid. Yet, there was one last thing. Ezekiel wrote: “The soul that sins he will die.” You gave up your spirit to defeat death for us. Your death was not like ours; you were in control and gave up your spirit; it was not taken. Because you were that sacrificial lamb that came to take away the sins of the world, and you defeated death for us.
Lord, forgive us when we fail to see the enormity of the sacrifice you made for us. Thank you for your perfect life and your innocent death for us so that we know you have completely forgiven all our sins. Let us never take advantage of your love and cheapen your grace by unrepentant and intentional sins.
Please send your Holy Spirit to us to create a changed heart in us; so that we are not afraid to tell others about these three words, “It is finished!” and what they mean for the world. So let us share your forgiveness with someone who does not know you, so they will also believe in the salvation you won for them. Amen.
