John 15:13

[Jesus said] No one has greater love than this: that someone lays down his life for his friends.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, and we celebrate and remember those who died to defend their fellow citizens; the ultimate sacrifice anyone can make is their life for another. So we say thank you to not only the service men and women who died defending us. We also ask that you bless those families that allowed their loved ones to go into harm’s way, supporting fatal missions.

We also thank You for allowing Your Son to go in harm’s way for us; Jesus came to this world to defeat sin, death, and the devil so that we would have freedom from our sins, peace in our temporal deaths, and know Satan no longer has any power over us. Jesus willingly gave up his life to suffer the ultimate sacrifice for all our sins and take all our sins to that cursed tree—the cross—so we have life. We pray that we would never take for granted the price he paid for our sins; Jesus’ precious holy blood saved us and has made our heavenly home the gift for all who believe in him. The remarkable thing is that Jesus did this while we were still hostile toward him, and we were stuck in our sins.

We pray that you would allow us to share the love you have for all people with those who still do not know or believe so that they would come to faith in your Son and have everlasting life. Amen.

We may never fully grasp God’s love for us, but sometimes we see others whose sacrifices might give us just a glimpse of God’s love for us.
