1 Corinthians 10:12-13
So let him who thinks he stands be careful that he does not fall. No testing has overtaken you except ordinary testing. But God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tested beyond your ability, but when he tests you, he will also bring about the outcome that you are able to bear it.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Hearing these words, a video of a person walking along a path comes to mind, unaware that the water was eroding the bank below them. As they stepped from that spot on the path over the bank, the path disappeared below their feet, collapsing into the water. We can become overconfident in our walk of life and focus on our efforts thinking that somehow, we have achieved what we have gotten. We might even direct the emphasis of our faith on our faith, thinking our faith and what we do for you has gotten us where we are. Lord, forgive us when we take our attention off you.
You punished your Son in our place, and now you allow testing and trials to come our way when you need to refocus us back to you. Forgive us when our pride gets involved, and we start looking toward ourselves. We can ask this because you already forgave our sins for Jesus’ sake; he suffered and died on the cross to satisfy the punishment for our sins. While our pride and sin can affect our faith if we leave it unchecked, you always remain faithful. You limit all tests which come our way and provide the way out for us that we can bear. By Jesus’ forgiveness for our sins, we are restored to you, and this is your desire that all people would have faith and be united with you.
Let us hold onto your promise that our testing will not be more than what we can handle, no matter how bad it might seem. Please send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us so we will cling to you as tests come our way. Allow us to share the good news of your faithfulness with those who do not know you; grant us opportunities to tell others about your love, mercy, and faithfulness to us. Please limit tests so they are not beyond what we can handle. Amen.
