John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him everything was made, and without him not one thing was made that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. The light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Dear Lord Jesus,

You, along with your Father and the Holy Spirit, created all that we see around us. The world as we see it began because you spoke it into being; you are the Word that brought life into the world. In your Word, in Genesis, you told Adam and Eve what the punishment of sin would be death; you said to them, “For on the day you eat from it, your will certainly die.” Death did come into the world, and all creation is affected by sin, and the darkness of sin covered the world.

However, You did not destroy this world and start over because of sin; instead, You became part of creation so You could give Yourself as a ransom for our sins by living a perfect life and then fulfilling sin’s punishment; you took our sins into yourself, you restored life to this world; you brought the light back into the world. Lord, we thank You for restoring us by Your death on the cross. Your death paid the punishment for every person’s sin, and it comes to all who believe in you; the gift of eternal life is ours through faith in you.

We humbly ask You to strengthen our faith today through Your Word. So that we know and trust that you are the source of the light and the reason for our restoration—with sins removed, we are reunited with you.

We also ask that as we go about our day, we can share the good news of Your light with those still walking in the darkness, and we pray that Your Holy Spirit will work in their hearts, creating a new faith to trust in You. Amen.
