Colossians 2:13-15

Even when you were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ by forgiving us all our trespasses. God erased the record of our debt brought against us by his legal demands. This record stood against us, but he took it away by nailing it to the cross. After disarming the rulers and authorities, he made a public display of them by triumphing over them in Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for giving us life. As Paul wrote—by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit—our souls begin this life dead in our trespasses and sins. Our sins separate us from You, and there is no life in that state of separation. While our physical bodies might be alive, there is no life in our souls until that sin is removed.

However, we have been made alive by faith in Your Son, our Savior. Jesus took all our sins into himself on the cross, and as Paul wrote, he erased the record of our debt against us. It was nailed to the cross with Christ; he made himself sin who knew no sin. So that believing in Jesus—his holy life and innocent death on the cross—we are restored to you. This public display of his death on the cross assures us that all our sins are removed, and if they are removed, then nothing separates us from you, and we have life through faith in Christ.

Thank you for sending your Son to restore us; let us in our joy and love for you share the good news of our forgiveness and salvation with those who do not know you. So that they, too, will know their debt of sin is removed; they will be restored to you and have life. Amen.

Sin keeps us from God, but faith in Jesus’ love, mercy, and forgiveness restores us to God. This gift is undeserved; it comes to you not because you have done anything to warrant it but entirely through God’s love.
