Ephesians 4:15-16

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we would in all things grow up into Christ, who is the head. From him the whole body, being joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows in accordance with Christ’s activity when he measured out each individual part. He causes the growth of the body so that it builds itself up in love.

Dear Lord Jesus,

This image Paul used to describe us as part of and growing into the body of the church is a vivid metaphor. Because so often, we can feel like we are an island by ourselves in the world’s wilderness, and this picture shows how intimately your people are joined together. The Holy Spirit started our faith to trust in your holy life and innocent death; we became part of the Church’s body through this faith, and by trusting that all our sins are forgiven, we are joined together into your body, the Church.

When I think of all the cells that are a part of my body, each has its particular function. They are all united together, linked arm-in-arm to do their specific function. Some provide an exterior covering, others give support, and others contribute by feeding, smelling, touching, seeing, and hearing. If I get a cut, particular cells quickly rush to the scene to heal the wound. Our bodies are outstanding in how all organs and systems function together as one person.

Likewise, the body of the Church is all united. Paul tells us the ligaments and muscles hold us together for the body to do its work. You have assigned each of us a particular task within your body, and we grow into the job you have set for us; you feed us with your word that we can diligently do our part within your kingdom. With you as our head, all the wisdom comes from you; please let your thoughts be our thoughts. Help us see and take the opportunities you give us to share your good news of faith and forgiveness with others so that by your love and mercy, they will also be grafted into your body. Please continue to build us up in love for one another. Amen.

Believers are not alone; we are all a part of Christ. If we are in him, then he is in us. Jesus promised that whoever remains in him, he gives life.
