1 John 2:1-2

My children, I write these things to you so that you will not sin. If anyone does sin, we have an Advocate before the Father: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the whole world.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for the fatherly way John wrote these words and for being our advocate before the Father. As John encourages us not to sin, he reminds us that on this side of heaven, we still fall to the temptations of our sinful flesh, and when we do, we have you. These words that John recorded give such peace, as he emphasized in his writings that your sacrifice and forgiveness are not only for us but also for the entire world. Lord, you came here to suffer on the cross for all people’s sins; this was not only the Father’s will but was also your will.

Because the human race had no other way of being saved, you gave your life as a ransom for all people. We have sinned against you and others; each sin we commit is another sentence of being separated from you forever, tormented in hell, where the internal and external sufferings never end and where there is nothing but anger, hatred, and rage. You made this place for those evil angels who revolted against you in heaven. Lord, we thank you for your suffering on our behalf so we never have to face eternal separation from you or the Father.

We thank you for sending us your Holy Spirit to believe and trust the gifts of forgiveness you have given us. We pray for forgiveness, which only comes to all people through your love and mercy; please remove all our sins and guilt. Strengthen our faith so we let go of every bit of guilt, resentment, hate, or anger that our sinful flesh refuses to release. We also pray that you intercede with those who do not know you or the forgiveness you have paid for them; let them hear of your love and mercy. Use us to share the good news of salvation with them so they, too, will share in your atoning sacrifice, which is waiting for them. As John wrote through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, your gift is for the whole world. Amen.

What comfort it is to have the one who suffered on the cross for your sins ready to go before the Father announcing, “I have paid for that soul’s sin; they are forgiven!”
