Hebrews 4:9-13

So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God rested from his work. Therefore, let us make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to the point of dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, even being able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from him, but everything is uncovered and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we will give an account.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for demonstrating your care for our well-being by reminding us you still have a Sabbath rest for all who trust in you. The idea of the Sabbath was for your people to hear Your word, receive Your forgiveness for all their sins, and be restored to You. By faith, we know, believe, and trust that Your Son suffered for our every sin, and our reaction is to love You with renewed and redeemed hearts. So our efforts are not out of compulsion or being forced, but a thankful response out of faith, knowing what Jesus has done for us.

As was written, “Your Word is sharper than any double-edged sword;” every sin, shame, and guilt is cut away and removed by Your Word; there is nothing more significant than You or Jesus. Jesus died on the cross as the ultimate atonement sacrifice for all our sins. As we consider Your Word, it is meant to show us how miserably we fail at keeping Your Word, but Jesus kept it perfectly for us; he has credited us with his perfection. Your warning is for those not able to see Your grace’s ability to cover sins or those who reject Your Word; everything they do will be exposed, and they will be accountable for everything they have done.

Lord, thank you for giving us rest in your word, that we have peace knowing the forgiveness Jesus won for us. Please allow us to share the good news about your salvation with those still terrified by their sins, knowing they will be accountable. Let us share your plan of salvation with them so they, too, will have a Sabbath rest. Amen.

God wants you to have rest from all your burdens by believing in him; he will give you rest and, more importantly, eternal rest in heaven when your life is done. Only faith in Jesus will give you eternal rest.
