1 Corinthians 10:12-13

So let him who thinks he stands be careful that he does not fall. No testing has overtaken you except ordinary testing. But God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tested beyond your ability, but when he tests you, he will also bring about the outcome that you are able to bear it.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being faithful to us and limiting what comes our way. Paul warns us that we should never become overconfident or prideful in our faith—having faith in our faith or ourselves. That we would become so overconfident in ourselves that we would ever do such and such sin; we are above that.

However, as sinners, none of us are above any particular sin, and we should never be surprised when we fall to its temptations. You tell us in Your Word, “We all have sinned and have fallen short of Your glory.” So when we sin, we need to turn to You, focusing our faith on Your Son and the forgiveness Jesus has won for us.

You gave us Your commandments to show us how to love You and others. Your word and commandments bring our sins into the light, and we realize our need for a Savior. When temptation comes our way, and we fall into sin, we know Jesus has died for those sins. We can turn to Him with repentant hearts, asking Him to forgive us, and He already has done so by His innocent suffering and death on the cross.

Through these words, we are confident we will not tested beyond what we can handle. You remain faithful to us when we fall into our sins and have already forgiven us, for Jesus’ sake. Your forgiveness does not give us a license to sin but assures us of the pardon Jesus won for us on the cross.

We also know that in our testing, You will bring about Your desired outcome: us to depend entirely upon You for our salvation. Let us share this good news with those around us: by faith, they will know Jesus as their Savior, be forgiven all their sins, and have salvation and eternal life. Amen

Know that God is faithful. He has already demonstrated his love by sending his Son to the cross to forgive all your sins. When we fall into the temptation of sin, he is ready and waiting for us with His forgiveness.
