John 19:30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished!” Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
Dear Lord Jesus,
These words You spoke from the cross must be some of the most significant words we sinners can hear. As You were placed upon the cross, Your first words were, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing!” Our sins put You on the cross; You asked for our forgiveness.
The suffering You endured—the mocking, the beatings, the heckling, the scourging, and the nails holding you with outstretched arms—was our punishment. Even worse, when Your heavenly Father turned his back on You, You endured our eternal condemnation for our sins.
“It is finished!” You alone suffered our punishment entirely; sin’s debt was paid in full. With Your innocent suffering, you redeemed us. There is nothing else we can add to the price You paid for our freedom.
Faith in You brings forgiveness of sins, salvation, and eternal life. The Holy Spirit instills faith in us through hearing Your Word; faith is the open hand that receives Your good and gracious gifts.
We pray that you will send your Holy Spirit into our hearts to begin faith in those who do not believe and to strengthen faith in those who trust in You. Let us receive your rest, knowing that our every sin has been paid in full. Amen.

“It is finished!” Jesus said. So that you know that no debt of sin remains; forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life are yours through faith in Him alone.
