Time for Grace – April 3, 2026

John 19:30

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished!” Then, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

Applying God’s Word for today: Our Debt of Sin Paid in Full

God’s plan of salvation was established to save us all from our sins when Adam and Eve were tempted and fell into sin. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s plan was being carried out even among those who completely rejected Him. When the time was right, He sent His Son so that the debt of our sin could be paid in full. All the prophecies about our salvation had to be fulfilled, and as they were all accomplished, Jesus declared, “It is finished!” The world’s debt and our debt were paid in full. He endured God’s wrath meant for us; He absorbed our condemnation to the very end. All of God’s punishment was accomplished through Jesus.

And He gave up His Spirit. It is different from us when our lives end; we have no control over the matter. Our hearts stop, and our journey is over. But Jesus willingly gave up His Spirit so that He could take it back again. For everyone who believes in Jesus, we are united with Him in His death and resurrection. Our sins are forgiven, and we are restored to the Father because Jesus paid the price for all our sins; not one remains. Jesus has defeated all our enemies: sin, death, and the devil. While we are still on earth, we continue to face them, but they no longer have authority over us. Those who reject God’s love and mercy give their enemies their power back, as they refuse God’s shield and protection, His grace and mercy.

Jesus gave up his spirit for you; he took on death so that your debt is paid and you have life.

Lord, thank You for flawlessly executing our plan of salvation. Please forgive us all the sins that could potentially separate us from You, strengthen our faith in Your word and sacraments. You have given Your Spirit so that everyone who believes in You may have eternal life and salvation. May we never forget the price You paid for the debt of our sins — Your holy, precious blood and Your innocent suffering and death. Amen.

God gave up His spirit to save you!
