Luke 10:38-42

As they went on their way, Jesus came into a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who was sitting at the Lord’s feet and was listening to his word. But Martha was distracted with all her serving. She came over and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.” The Lord answered and told her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is needed. In fact, Mary has chosen that better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Dear Heavenly Father,

We are like Martha, and we quickly get distracted by many things in our lives. We have gadgets and calendars to keep us on track with everything we have to do, but we often lose track of the one thing needful, your word. I can only imagine the wonderful news your Son taught Mary that day. Lord, teach us the patience to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from him in your word. Your word instills in us the forgiveness of sins Jesus has won for us, how he lived the perfect life, gave us credit, and then suffered for our sins with his innocent death on the cross. Lord, these truths are what we need to hear every day. So fill our hearts with your gospel, and strengthen our faith with your word. Be with us that we might be more like Mary and not get anxious or worried over what we have no control over, but turn those things over to you. Then strengthen us to refocus ourselves on what truly matters, our salvation. With our focus on you, let us share the good news of our salvation with someone who does not know you, so they will hear about what is essential for their lives—the full forgiveness of sins by Jesus. Amen.

The one thing needed for our salvation is God’s word; it should never be neglected because it creates and sustains faith. Your faith determines where you will spend eternity—belief in Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, do not believe, and you will be damned to hell.
