1 Timothy 6:6-8

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly cannot take anything out. But if we have food and clothing, with these, we will be satisfied.

Dear Heavenly Father,

There are many things we think we need to survive. When we go through our lists of must-haves, we connect them to our food and clothes. All hope will be lost if I don’t have suitable transportation or a key location. So you tell us through Paul’s words that godliness with contentment is great gain, and we only need food and clothing. All the treasures we acquire in this life amount to someone else’s burden to get rid of when we are gone; they don’t find the value in them as we did.

Godliness is not focusing on this life but on our eternal home. We focus ourselves on Jesus and the forgiveness he won for us on the cross, where he took all our sins into himself. Godliness is not something we can ever achieve on our own but by faith in Christ, your Son, Our Savior. By faith in Jesus, we know and trust he has removed our sins. With our sins gone, we are untied to you, which results in our spontaneous love for you and others.

Knowing that you bless us with our every need (often in abundance), we trust you. By faith, we become content because all our sins are forgiven, and our souls will one day rest eternally with you. The two things our bodies need for this life are food and clothing. So, we pray for contentment, which can only come through you. Please bless us today with all that you deem necessary, and thank you for the abundance that you give us.

Let our contentment for your blessings be our testimony to others who do not know you. Let them learn of your love and forgiveness; begin faith in them to trust in Jesus as their Savior; give them godly contentment so they are united to you and have a sure hope of heaven and salvation. Amen.

You cannot achieve godly contentment on your own; it is a gift delivered by faith in Jesus. Be content knowing that Jesus has forgiven all your sins; godly contentment also brings peace, knowing that all your sins are forgiven through Jesus.
