Matthew 12:40
For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Dear Lord Jesus,
The Jews sought a sign that you were the Son of God. Your body rested in the grave after you willingly went to the cross and gave up your spirit. You could have come down from the cross but chose not to. Joseph and Nicodemus took you down from the cross and placed you in the tomb. Those who demanded a sign sealed your body in that tomb. Your spirit was in heaven. You rested!
Your work was completed; sin and the devil had been defeated upon the cross. Death was about to be destroyed when you would rise Easter morning. You rested!
In the beginning, when you created the universe with your heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit, you rested on the seventh day. Everything was made in those six days, and it was perfect—very good. The salvational work of restoring us to your perfection was also completed. Sin divided us from you, our Lord, but your death and resurrection restored us all. What occurred that first Easter marked the first day of a restored creation. You paid the eternal price with your innocent suffering and death, along with your holy, precious blood.
Because you rested, we can be confident that your salvational work is complete. You brought us all life, and it comes to us by faith in you. Salvation was accomplished. You rested.
Grant us opportunities to share the good news of our salvation accomplished for us on the cross. As we share this good news, let your word work in the hearts of those around us so that they may believe and have everlasting life because you rested! Amen.
