Time for Grace – July 24, 2025

John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them. They testify about me!

Dear Lord Jesus,

As we confront the reality of death, there is a natural desire for life, and some wish to live forever. Occasionally, stories surface of individuals trying to achieve immortality through science and medicine. Although most people dislike thinking about death, including the reality of losing loved ones, we live aware of our mortality. Life tends to remind us of its impending end as we face the hardships of aging.

The world around us fails to see the answer to this problem: You are the key to eternal life. When sin entered the world, death followed, bringing sickness, disease, unhappiness, and aging; our bodies continue to suffer over time from living in this world. Nothing we do or achieve can reverse the effects of sin on our bodies. You are the key to overcoming sin, and you bring eternal life to all who believe in you. You fulfilled the Old Testament promise of being the world’s Savior; you willingly went to the cross to suffer for all our sins, and as the innocent Son of God, you endured punishment so that we are forgiven. All who trust in you are saved and granted eternal life, to live with you forever.

We pour out all our sins to you and admit where we have failed to love you above all else, and how we’ve acted without love toward those around us. We deserve eternal punishment, but we ask you to forgive us because of your great love and mercy. Through your forgiveness, please grant us eternal life and remove everything that separates us from you. Please restore us to you.

Thank you for fulfilling the promises of the Old Testament that point to you. Let us share the good news of eternal life with those who do not know you. We ask that faith would begin in them so that they, too, will have eternal life through you. Amen.

The Old Testament points to the coming of the Savior, along with the rebellious ways of God’s people and the calls to the people from the prophets. The New Testament reveals that the Savior has come and redeemed us through His death on the cross, and all who believe have eternal life.
