Applying God’s Word for Today: Light for the Darkness You Feel

A Doorway of Light: Psalm 119:130

The doorway to your words lets in light. It gives understanding to the inexperienced.

Have you ever felt trapped in the dark—guilty, ashamed, or afraid that God is waiting to judge you? Looking at the Bible for the first time can feel daunting. Maybe you’ve heard it’s nothing but myths and legends. You wonder, “What good would it do anyhow?”

That feeling of complete darkness can be overwhelming. Things go in the wrong direction; you feel guilty about what you’ve said or ashamed because people judge you. Amid all the world’s noise, you feel alone. Worse, God seems like an angry God, just waiting to strike you down the moment you set foot in a church.

So, let’s shed some light on your situation. God’s Word gives understanding to those who don’t know God, to those who only know of Him, and to those who know of Him yet still struggle with their past. Let’s get this out front: God hates sin—your sin, my sin, and everyone’s sin. When the human race fell into sin, the curse of death fell on us all, but God did not leave us in that condition. He promised to send a Savior who would defeat sin. He sent His Son. God wants to forgive all your sins, but let’s face it, we don’t stop sinning. He even tells us this in His Word.

Jesus came; He was born of Mary on that first Christmas. He needed to be part of the human race, our brother, so He could live the perfect life we fail to keep daily. Then He went to the cross, took everyone’s sins with Him, and suffered God’s eternal wrath for our sins—Jesus was our substitute. You might ask: Why? Because of God’s love for His creation. Your sins are all forgiven, and in their place Jesus has given you His righteousness. So, by God’s grace, through faith, everyone who believes receives God’s mercy and is restored to the Father. Salvation and eternal life await you at the end of this life—yours by faith in Christ.

All this is the light of the Bible. As you read the good news of salvation, the Holy Spirit works in you. God loves you!

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Word to illuminate our sins. We turn to You and receive forgiveness for our sins; the only unforgivable sin is rejecting the faith the Holy Spirit gives. Work in our hearts and give us a desire to know You more. Shed Your light on our situation so that, by faith in Jesus, we will come to know You. Grant us Your grace, mercy, peace, and love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

God’s Word not only recounts the world’s history; it also shows that God has not given up on you. He established a plan of salvation to redeem you so you could be with Him forever. May His Word bless you. May you trust in the Lord and receive His salvation. May His light shine on you.
