Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us get rid of every burden and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patient endurance the race that is laid out for us. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal. In view of the joy set before him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Often, our lives can feel like we are tumbling out of control rather than running. When we sprint out of reaction to what people say or do, that upsets us, and we lunge at them because our pride is tested; we get tripped up with our sin. Or when we dart after something that seems desirable at the time without considering how loveless it is towards those around us, we can stumble and fall. Our sins can bind us up, and while we cannot rid ourselves of them on our own or with good intent, we can remove every bit of sin by faith in Jesus.
The writer of Hebrews tells us to keep our eyes on the author of our faith. Through Jesus’ teachings and words, we recognize our sins. We can know and trust the forgiveness he won for us on the cross by keeping our eyes fixed on him in faith. His forgiveness brings our lives to their goal: to be with you for eternity in heaven.
Jesus willingly suffered the pain and scorn of the cross in our place so that we have eternal life, and you have given him all authority over us. He was sent to restore us to you so that everyone who believes in him has been completely forgiven and given your gift of salvation.
Please grant us opportunities to share this good news of your love, mercy, and salvation with those who do not know or trust in you. Please send your Holy Spirit to them so that through your word, he will work faith in their souls so that they will believe and be received as your children. Amen.

Life is a long race that we can only win by focusing on Jesus. He suffered the cross for you because he loves you and wants you in heaven’s winner’s circle.
